Key fobs have become so central to how we use our vehicles that when one stops working, it can feel like being locked out โ even when the physical key still turns. If your fob isn't responding, here's what's probably going on and what your options are.
Why Key Fobs Stop Working
Dead battery. This is the most common cause by far. Key fob batteries typically last 2 to 4 years. Most vehicles will display a "low battery" warning before total failure, but not all do. A battery replacement is a two-minute fix โ CR2032 or CR2025 batteries from any pharmacy or auto parts store.
Before calling a locksmith, try replacing the battery. If the fob works after, you're done.
Loss of pairing. When a vehicle battery is completely disconnected or runs dead, it can reset the vehicle's stored key programming. The physical key still works, but the fob's remote functions may be lost. This requires reprogramming, not replacement.
Damaged fob circuit. A fob that's been dropped, submerged, or cracked may have a failed circuit board even if the battery is fine. Sometimes the shell can be replaced; sometimes the fob needs to be replaced and reprogrammed.
Interference. In rare cases, proximity to certain electronics can disrupt fob signals temporarily. If your fob fails in one specific location but works fine elsewhere, this may be the cause.
Fob range issues. Fob range decreases as the battery weakens. If you have to stand very close to the car for the buttons to work, it's usually a battery on the way out.
